Cenote Ik Kil

Yucatan, Mexico

What it is

Cenote Ik Kil, a few minutes from Chichen Itza, is the great open well of the Yucatan, a near-perfect circular sinkhole almost sixty metres across with sheer walls that drop to a deep green pool below the jungle floor. Long vines and tree roots trail all the way down the cliff faces to the water, and a carved stone stairway spirals from the rim to a swimming deck at the bottom. It is the classic refreshing swim after a hot morning at the ruins: deep, cool freshwater open to the sky, with little black catfish darting below and the walls towering overhead. Ik Kil is built for swimming, which is exactly why nearly every Chichen Itza tour stops here.

How to visit

Ik Kil is right beside the road to Chichen Itza and is the cenote most day trips include, so it can be busy in the middle of the day when the coaches arrive. It has full facilities: a restaurant, changing rooms, lockers and life vests, and the spiral stairway makes the deep pool easy to reach. The water is deep with no shallow end, so a life vest is sensible for weaker swimmers, but there is no current and the swimming area is open and supervised. To enjoy it calmly, come early before the Chichen Itza crowds shift over, or visit late in the afternoon. Bring only biodegradable sunscreen, as regular lotions are not allowed in the water.

Hours & practical info

Open daily roughly 9am to 5pm. Entry fee, life vest rental, restaurant and changing rooms on site. Deep open-air freshwater pool.
