Cristalino Cenote

Riviera Maya, Mexico

What it is

Cristalino Cenote, on the highway just south of Playa del Carmen, is one of the most accessible open cenotes on the Riviera Maya and a favourite for an easy swim and snorkel. It is a long, open-air pool of brilliantly clear freshwater, part sunlit basin and part shaded overhang where the rock ledge forms a low cavern you can snorkel beneath. The clarity gives it its name, cristalino, crystalline, and the mix of open water and a small jumping ledge makes it fun for confident swimmers while the shallower edges and easy stairs keep it friendly for families. It is the quick, reliable cenote close to the resorts when you do not have a full day for an inland trip.

How to visit

Cristalino sits right on Highway 307 a few minutes south of Playa del Carmen, so it is one of the simplest cenotes to reach independently by taxi, colectivo or rental car, with parking, lockers, basic facilities and snorkel rental at the gate. It also features on many short cenote-swim tours from Playa del Carmen, often paired with the neighbouring Cristal and Jardin del Eden cenotes for a half-day loop. The open layout means good light most of the day, but it gets busy on weekends and midday, so come early for the calmest, clearest water. There is a small ledge for jumping into the deeper section, while the shallow end and steps suit children and weaker swimmers with a vest.

Hours & practical info

Open daily, daytime hours. Entry fee, parking, lockers and snorkel rental on site. Clear open-air freshwater right off Highway 307.
