Dry season vs rainy season

The Yucatan has two seasons. The dry season runs November to April with sunny days, low humidity and firm jungle roads. This is peak travel time and the best window for photo cenotes and self drive trips. The rainy season runs May to October, hotter and more humid with short afternoon downpours, but mornings are usually clear and cenotes are far quieter.

Because most cenotes are underground and spring fed, rain barely affects water clarity inside cavern cenotes like Dos Ojos. Open jungle cenotes can get a little cloudier after heavy storms.

Month by month

  • November to February: coolest and driest. Best for combining cenotes with Chichen Itza or Tulum ruins. Suytun light beam strongest. Book ahead, this is high season
  • March to April: warm, dry, busy with spring break. Great water clarity, arrive early to beat crowds
  • May to August: hot and humid, sargassum on beaches makes cenotes the better swim. Fewer tourists, lower prices
  • September to October: wettest months and low season. Cheapest, emptiest cenotes, just plan around short afternoon rain

Best time for the Suytun light beam

The most asked question. The famous sunbeam hitting the platform at Cenote Suytun appears between 11am and 1pm, and only on sunny days. The effect is strongest from January to March when the sun angle is right. Go on a weekday, arrive by 10:30am and wait. On cloudy or rainy days the beam does not form. Read our full guide to reaching Suytun.

Best time of day at any cenote

Regardless of season, open at 8 to 9am is the sweet spot. Tour buses from Cancun and Playa del Carmen arrive between 11am and 2pm, so the early window gives you glassy water and space. Late afternoon after 3pm also thins out as day tours head back. A guided morning cenote tour handles the early pickup for you.

Water temperature and what to wear

Water is a constant 24 to 26 degrees Celsius all year. No wetsuit needed for swimming or snorkeling. For long cavern snorkel routes or cave dives a thin rash guard or 3mm shorty adds comfort. Always use biodegradable sunscreen or none at all, regular sunscreen is banned to protect the underground ecosystem.

Plan your cenote day

Book a morning cenote tour to beat the crowds. Snorkel gear, transport and a local Mayan guide included. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Frequently asked questions

November to April is the best window. These are the dry season months with little rain, clearer jungle roads and the strongest light beams at photo cenotes like Suytun. May to October is hotter and wetter, but cenotes stay open and water clarity inside cavern cenotes barely changes since they are spring fed.

Arrive at opening, usually 8 to 9am. You get empty water for photos, calmer conditions and cooler temperatures before the tour buses arrive around 11am. The exception is Cenote Suytun, where the famous sunbeam through the ceiling only appears between 11am and 1pm in the dry season.

No. Cenote water is spring fed and stays a constant 24 to 26 degrees Celsius, about 75 to 79 Fahrenheit, all year round. It feels refreshing on a hot Yucatan day. Open cenotes in full sun feel warmer, deep cavern cenotes feel a touch cooler. A rash guard helps on long snorkel routes.
